Swedish Massage

My vision is to make touch a positive social value in our culture. - David Palmer

The most commonly used massage in this country is the ‘Swedish Massage’. It involves applying sensual massage oils to the patient before using a range of different hand strokes and a certain amount of pressure on the body. The most common part of the body for a Swedish massage is the back. A massage session can last up to an hour, with extra time to relax, having had the massage treatment. The benefits of the Swedish massage is a reduction in tension and stress in the body and a general sense of wellness in the mind.

Purpose Of Swedish Massage: The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

Swedish Massage Techniques: Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions.

Effleurage - This technique involves either light or deep gliding strokes using the fingers, palms or knuckles. It is used to spread massage oil, warm the muscles, and allow the therapist to evaluate your tissues.

Petrissage - This kneading technique involves lifting, rolling and wringing the tissue in between the fingertips, much as you would roll bread dough. It is used to stretch muscle fibres, promote waste elimination and relax muscles.

Friction - A rubbing technique characterised by slow, firm rolling or stroking movements, it is intended to compress and spread the tissues. Friction helps to broaden and stretch muscle fibres, loosen constrictions in the muscles and tissues and encourage waste elimination.

Tapotement - This quick striking and tapping technique can involve light fingertip taps, “karate chop” style striking, open-palmed slaps and pounding using both fists. It is used to increase vitality and stimulate the nerves, tired muscles, skin and organs.

Vibration - This involves very fine, rapid shaking movements intended to increase circulation, promote vital energy and stimulate or loosen muscles.

Benefits Of Swedish Massage: Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.
